It’s still dark when I open my eyes. Colt and I went straight to bed last night. He was already asleep by the time I got out of the shower. I’ve been staying at his townhouse the past three nights. And in the past three weeks since our first night together, there was not a day that we were not in touch. Felicity tells me that we’re moving way too fast. Of course, we don’t tell anyone at school, and when we see each other in the hallway or in class, we behave exactly like a professor and his student.

To my surprise, Colt is already up, lying on his side facing me with one arm under his head, and the other caressing my waist.

“Hi,” he whispers.

“Hey,” I sleepily reply. “Have you been up a while? Are you okay?”

“Just looking at you.”

“Why?” I reach for his face, barely visible in the light coming in through the window.

“I like it,” he says thoughtfully.

“You like looking at me?” I cover my face with both hands, feeling self-conscious.

“Yes . . .” He pulls my hands gently off my face and brings me closer to him. I put my arms around his neck. This has been my perfect happy place the past three weeks.

“I like looking at your face too. It makes me happy.” I kiss him on the nose. He wiggles it lightly and smiles. Something stirs inside me.

“You make me happy.” He brushes some stray hair off my face, and I feel like my heart is going to explode. I’m too afraid to understand what we have. I’m not ready to put too much attention into how I feel about him right now.

“How do you feel about your divorce?” He shifts, raising his head and shoulders, and leans on his arm.

“I’m fine. I thought it’d be harder. It was a piece of paper. My marriage ended a year ago.”

“Did you talk to him today? Simon?” He never speaks his name, so this here is a surprise.

“He sent me a text. I know this isn’t easy for him either.”

“Why are you making excuses for him?” His jaw hardens.

“I’m not. I just don’t want to blame him. In some weird way, I’m actually happy that I’m free.” I look away from him and stare at the ceiling in deep thought.

No one speaks for a few minutes; we just enjoy the silence of dawn in each other’s arms.

“My dad killed my mom when I was seventeen years old. He was such a jealous, insecure man.” He lowers his head. I gasp and, wanting to protect him, I bring him closer to me, and kiss his forehead.

“Oh, baby . . .” I say, as I feel my emotions welling up inside me. “Colt . . .” I pull him even closer, not wanting him to let go.

“Nobody knew about it, but I heard the lawyers and the police talking after they found them together dead.” I hold him tighter. “I’m complicated, confused. I have so much shit to work through.
